Knockout Final 2018

This year’s knockout final was also fished on River Stort backwater, at the same time as the Rose Bowl match. It was contested between Ricky Young, Alan Sims and myself. Well done to Ricky who took the honours on the day with his 5lbs 2oz catch.

Gaye Plate Xmas Match

Taylor's Top Lake 9th December 2018

There was a good turnout of 15 angler’s for this year’s Xmas match which was fished on The Top Lake at Taylor’s. Conditions were far from ideal, with cool temperatures and a stiff north easterly breeze. Despite this there were some good weights recorded with over 180lbs of fish caught by those taking part. It was also pleasing to see some of the newly stocked bream being caught. Top on the day was Alan Fox with 38lbs 2ozs, Andy Ingram was 2nd with 34lbs and  Karl Ross 3rd with 30lbs 3ozs. In the evening we reconvened at the Galley Hall in Hailey with our partners and a number of guests for the prize giving and a traditional Xmas meal. Thanks to Will Ramthor for organising the meal, prizes and the pre match drinks.

ACAS v BSDAS

Taylor's Top Lake

5th December 2018

December’s inter club match with Bishops Stortford was due to be fished on the River Stort at Taylor’s. However, following the fish kill on the river earlier in the year it was decided to move the match to the Top Lake at Taylor’s. On the day, with many fish shoaled up in the shallower areas of the lake there were some very good weights for a number of anglers. For those less fortunate things were a lot harder and they had to struggle for a few fish. Team wise Bishops Stortford came out on top with 73 points to our 63. Individually Bob Walmsley was top with 51lbs, Ken Farrell 2nd with 50lbs and Phil Whitmill of Bishops Stortford 3rd with 31lbs.

Random Pairs Match

Taylor's Car Park Lake

25th November 2018

This year the Random Pairs match was fished on the Car Park Lake at Taylor’s. Following a number of cold days leading up to the match all expectations were that it was going to be a difficult day and this was also not helped by a cold north easterly breeze blowing down the lake. Although larger sized fish were hard to come by most people managed to catch reasonable numbers of small roach, plus the odd decent F1 and perch. Top pair on the day were myself and Bob Fox who finished with 24 points and 2nd were Alan Sims & Ken Farrell with 20 points. Individually I had top weight with 13lbs 3ozs greatly helped by a fortuitous 9lb carp.

IPA TEAMS OF SIX RIVER IVEL

18th NOVEMBER 2018

This year’s IPA Teams of Six was fished on stretches of the River Ivel in and around Sandy. For the last two years we have won the trophy and hopes were high for a third win on the trot. Unfortunately, following a poor draw we were unable to repeat our previous success. Similar to last year a few favoured areas fished quite well , but for the majority of those taking part the fishing was hard going. Team wise Braggers AC were comfortable winners, with Kings Arms 2nd and Abbey Cross 3rd.

ACAS v BSDAS Hall Farm

7th November 2018

Our latest inter club match with Bishops Stortford was fished at their Hall Farm Lake. This was a late change from the planned venue Beggars Hall, where there was bank clearance work going on. Conditions were tough on the day with strong southerly winds and occasional showers. Sport was equally tough with most of us struggling to get the odd bite. The one exception was John Pretious fishing for Bishops Stortford who had a nice bag of carp and F1’s weighing 33lbs 8ozs for an easy individual win. I was 2nd with 5lbs 15ozs and Alan Sims 3rd with 5lbs 5ozs. Team wise things were close with Bishops Stortford just coming out on top with 54 points to our 51.

OUSE TROPHY

BOX END FARM 28th OCT 2018

The club’s stretch of the River Ouse at Box End Farm was the venue for this match. On arrival conditions looked quite good with reasonable flow, a tinge of colour in the water and not too much weed. Last year this match was a real struggle with only two people weighing in a couple of ounces each. This time although the fishing was hard work it was a little better than last year, with everyone weighing in at least a few fish.  I had top weight on the day with 4lbs 9ozs, a mixed bag of small dace, chub, roach & bleak. Bob Walmsley was 2nd with 1lbs 10zs which included a decent perch & Ken Farrell was 3rd with 1lbs 9ozs of small fish.

John Duff Cup Hunter's Hall

14th October 2018

This match was fished on the clubs Hunter’s Hall lake. This was our first match at Hunter’s Hall since the new platforms were put in and we were all keen to try these pegs out. Unfortunately, on the day we had a strong northerly wind blowing down the lake along with some heavy rain, consequently those drawn on the platforms were exposed to the worst of the weather. Understandably given the conditions weights were well down on recent visits to Hunter’s, with the more sheltered pegs faring best. Top weight on the day went to Steve Cable with a weight of 25lbs 5ozs, I was 2nd with 17lbs 7ozs and Ken Farrell 3rd with 11lbs 8ozs.

Taylor's Top Lake 3rd October 2018

It was back to the Top Lake at Taylor’s again for October’s  inter club match with Bishops Stortford. Fortunately the weather was a lot more pleasant than what we had on the previous Sunday and the fish were a bit more prepared to feed. Team wise our local knowledge came to the fore and we had a comfortable win with 92 points to Bishop Stortford’s 79. Individually we had Peter Green in 1st place with a weight of 34lbs 1oz and I was 2nd with 29lbs, 3rd place went to Terry Moranda of Bishops Stortford with 25lbs 4ozs.

Fred Sandland Cup

Taylor's Top Lake 30th Sept 2018

This year’s Fred Sandland Cup was fished at Taylor’s on the Top Lake. With the lake being quite clear and with a cool northerly breeze blowing it was never going to be an easy day. There was also a lot of pike activity which resulted in a number of lost fish and even a broken pole! Come the weigh in we did end up with a few decent weights, mostly from the noted pegs. However, quite a few of us struggled for the odd F1 along with a few silver fish. Top on the day was Nick Prince with 34lbs 13ozs, Alan Sims was 2nd with 23lbs 8ozs and Peter Green was 3rd with 19lbs 12ozs.

Norfolk Weekend Wye Trophy & River Cup

For this year’s weekend away the club returned to the Norfolk Broads to fish the River Bure at St Benets Abbey and the River Thurne at Coldharbour. Saturday’s match was at St Benets where we were fortunate to have good weather which was much more agreeable than last year’s heavy rain. We had the tide running out for the first couple of hours and then had to fish the rising incoming tide for the rest of the match. As usual  the stretch fished pretty well, with everyone catching skimmers, roach and perch on the feeder, or pole.  Top weight with 26lbs 14ozs was Steve Cable, Stuart Curtis was 2nd with 23lbs 1oz and I was 3rd with 22lbs 13ozs. The following day at Coldharbour we were met with strong westerly breeze, but fortunately the forecast rain held off. Fishing wise weights were well down on Saturday, but everyone still caught a few fish. Most of the weights were made up of roach, with a few skimmers, perch and rudd thrown in for good measure. 1st on the day was Stuart Curtis with 15lbs 8oz, I was 2nd with 10lbs 15ozs and Steve Cable was 3rd 10lbs 14ozs. Once again we all had a great weekend of fishing and socialising, so I am sure we will be returning again next year.

Triple Cup Teams of 15

9th September 2018

The Triple Cup is an annual 15 a side competition fished  between, Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth & Abbey Cross. The venue for this year’s match was Cross Drove Fishery in Suffolk. Results for this competition are calculated on points, so to stand any chance of doing well you need a full team of 15 anglers. Unfortunately, due to a various reasons, such a clash of dates and people being on holiday we were a few anglers short and hence our results suffered. On the day Bishops Stortford were 1st with 70 points, we were 2nd with 129 points and Sawbridgeworth were 3rd with 161 points.

Our latest inter club match with Bishops Stortford was fished on their Hall Farm Lake. Weather wise it was a difficult day with a strong northerly breeze blowing down the lake and a big drop in air temperature. Consequently, the fishing was hard going for most of those taking part, although there were a few good individual weights. Team wise it was a really close run affair, with Bishops Stortford just pipping Abbey Cross by 2 points. Individually I had top weight on the day with 50lbs 5ozs thanks to a late run of fish caught down the inside, Phil Whitmill was 2nd with 33lbs 12ozs and Don Copping 3rd with 23lbs.

This match was the 2nd leg of our annual competition with METVETS and was fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s. Last year’s match was a close run affair with Abbey Cross just taking the honours. Although the top couple of individual weights were good, many of those fishing struggled with the heavy weed growth. CARP CUP NAZEING

22nd JULY 2018

The Car Park Lake at Nazeing was the venue for this match. Unfortunately the turnout was very poor, not helped by the fact that a number of our regulars fished a charity match on the Saturday and didn’t fancy fishing two days running given the extremely hot weather. Conditions on the day were hot with little wind and the resident carp could be seen basking on the top. Fortunately they were also prepared to feed and so we had some good weights. I had top weight 99lbs, Ricky Young was 2nd with 95lbs 10ozs and Alan Fox was 3rd with 57lbs 9ozs.

This was the first leg of our annual match against METVETS fished and on their Wrotham Park lake. This estate lake is a very shallow, but holds a good head of match sized carp. Similar to last year’s match  those fortunate enough to be drawn in the favoured areas had a good days sport, however for the rest of those taking part it was hard work putting a few fish in the net. On the day team wise Abbey Cross came out on top with 71 points to METVETS 64. Individually I was 1st with 88lbs 2ozs, Martin Barsby was 2nd 57lbs 10ozs and Pat Rawlings 3rd with 40lbs 6ozs.

Burrough's Cup

Taylor's Top Lake 8th July 2018

The Top Lake at Taylor’s was the venue for this year’s Burrough’s Cup club match. Turnout was well down on what we normally expect at Taylor’s. This was probably due to the really hot weather we are currently experiencing, great for sunbathing, but not ideal for fishing. With fewer people on the bank we were able to just use some of the better pegs and this helped those taking part to put together some decent weights of fish. Alan Fox was 1st with an excellent 53lbs 1oz, I was 2nd with 27lbs 8ozs and Peter Green a close run 3rd with 26lbs 10ozs.

Our latest midweek inter club match was fished on Bishop’s Stortford’s Beggar’s Hall Lake. Early on during the match many of the resident carp could be seen swimming round on the surface and showing little interest in feeding. Fortunately, as the match progressed they did start to feed in the favoured pegs and by the end there were some decent weights brought to the scales. Team wise Bishop’s Stortford came out on top with 58 points to our 57. Although we did have the top two individuals with Peter Green coming 1st with 69lbs 4ozs and I was 2nd with 46lbs 5ozs.

BBQ Match Pairs & Lil' Williams Trophy

Taylor's 23rd June 2018

There was a good turnout for this year’s BBQ match held at Taylor’s. We had 40 people fishing the pairs competition on Top Lake and 10 individuals having their own competition on the Car Park Lake. Adding in those who did not fish, we had a total of over 70 attending the evening BBQ. Fortunately the weather was kind to us with warm temperatures and a light breeze. However the fishing wasn’t great, probably due to the number of people spread around the lakes. This was especially the case on the Car Park Lake which proved to be particularly challenging for those taking part. The pairs event was won by Jean & Peter Green with an excellent combined weight of 26lbs 7ozs, Kelly & Steve Cable were 2nd and Rosemary & Alan Fox 3rd. In the individual event Chris Beaumont was 1st, Pat Rawlings 2nd & Tony Williams 3rd and the Lil Williams Trophy was won by Katie West. The evening food and drink was as excellent as ever and everyone seemed to have a good time.  A big thank you to all those who worked behind the scenes to make the event such a success.

However, the fish had other ideas and although a dozen, or so of the newly stocked tench were caught very few bream and roach showed and we all found getting bites hard work. Team wise it was a comfortable win for Abbey Cross who had 98 points to Bishop’s Stortford’s 73. Individually Phil Whitmaill was 1st with 21lbs 2ozs, Alan Fox was 2nd with 15lbs 6ozs and I was 3rd with 8lbs 3ozs.

Taylors Top Lake Lake

3rd June 2018

Due to the closure of Nazeing due to the carp spawning there was a late venue change to the Top Lake at Taylor’s for this match. Although weights were down a bit from our previous match we still had a total weight of over 220lbs between the 10 of us taking part. It was close run affair for the winning weights, I had top weight with 30lb 11ozs, Tony Smith was 2nd with 29lbs and Paul Sales was 3rd with 28lbs 12ozs.

Taylor's Top Lake

19 May 2018

With warm weather and a light breeze conditions looked good at the start of our latest club match fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s. With the twelve angler’s taking part spread out around the lake everyone had plenty of room and this helped to produce some good weights. In total between us we weighed in over 300lbs of mostly F1’s & tench. Top weight went to Nick Farrell with an excellent 45lbs 9ozs, Peter Green was second with 30lbs 5ozs and Alan Fox third with 29lbs 10ozs.

Hall Farm 2 May 2018

Bishop Stortford’s Hall Farm lake was the venue for our latest interclub match. There had been good catches from the lake in recent weeks however on the day strong winds and cool temperatures lead to a challenging day for all. Team wise Bishop’s Stortford won a close contest with 70 points to our 66. However, we did have the consolation of having the top two individual weights, with Peter Green coming 1st with  21lb 13ozs and I was 2nd with 16lb 4ozs.

Fennes Fishery

21 April 2018

This match was fished on the big lake at Fennes Fishery and with the recent glorious weather expectations were high for a good day. As it turned out plenty of fish were caught with most of the weights made up of decent sized bream and F1’s. Top weight on the day went to Pat Rawlings who weighed in 48lbs 4ozs for an easy win. After Pat weights were a lot closer with 8lbs covering the next six anglers. In the end Peter Green was 2nd with 27lbs 7ozs and Paul Sales 3rd with 26lbs 5ozs. Our next club match is at Clavering Lakes on Saturday May 19th.

REG BRAYNE TROPHY

R. IVEL SANDY 18TH FEBRUARY 2018

The match was fished on the School stretch of the River Ivel at Sandy. This is a narrow and quite shallow section of the river owned by the local Kings Arms club. The recent cold weather kept a number of angler’s away, however for those who fished there were good weights of roach to be had if you drew the favoured areas. It was a tight finish for first place with Stuart Curtis weighing in 8lbs 15ozs, just beating Paul Helbig who had 8lbs 12ozs. Terry Lincoln was third with 3lbs 12ozs.

Taylors Lake 21st January 2018

Our latest match was at Taylors. Conditions were far from ideal with temperatures at near zero. There was a thin layer of ice on the lake and snowed nearly all day but the lake fished well with Peter Green weighing in 42lb-9oz and Alan Fox weighing in 33lb 12oz.  6 fished 5 weighed in for 92lb 7oz.

Fred Sandland Cup R.Stort Backstream

7th January 2018

Our latest club match was fished on a back water of the River Stort run by the Bishops Stortford club. The backwater runs just behind Taylor’s and is quite narrow with canal boats moored on the far bank in most pegs. The recent heavy rain meant that the river had good colour and a nice flow. So despite near freezing conditions and a cold northerly wind it fished quite well. Most people caught roach on a variety of baits plus there were some decent perch weighed in. Top on the day was Bob Fox with 6lbs 12ozs, I was second with 6lbs, Alan Fox third with 4lbs 9ozs and Alan Sims had a nice 1lb 14oz perch in his fourth place weight.
