Gaye Plate Xmas Match

Taylor's Lake 5th December 2021

Our annual Xmas match this year was fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s. Given the cold weather we had a pretty good turnout with 13 anglers taking part. The fishing turned out to be tough going for all  with just a few F1’s coming to the net and with no silver fish being caught weights were well down on normal. Top on the day was Tony Parker with 8lbs, Bob Fox was 2nd with 4lbs 2ozs and I was 3rd with 3lbs 4ozs. In the evening we reconvened at the Galley Hall pub in Hailey with our partners and guests for the prize giving and a celebratory meal. Thanks to Willy Ramthor for organising the pre match drinks, snacks and the Xmas meal and prizes.

CLUB MATCH TAYLOR'S TOP LAKE

24th OCTOBER 2021

This match had been due to be fished at Box End Farm on the river Ouse. However, heavy rain for a number of days in advance of the match made the river unfishable, so it was transferred to the Top Lake at Taylor’s. It still proved to be quite a difficult day, but at least most people caught fish. Top on the day was Kevin Shaw with 19lbs 8ozs, Jeff Pearson was 2nd with 15lbs 9ozs and Alan Fox 3rd with 13lbs 2ozs.

John Duff Cup Hunter's Hall

10th October 2021

The latest club match was fished at Hunter’s Hall for the John Duff Cup. Weather conditions were far from ideal with a cool north westerly breeze blowing down the lake. This had quite an impact on the fishing with most of the normally prolific lower numbered pegs failing to produce and allowing the weights to come from the swims on the far side.  I had top weight with 19lbs 6ozs, Alan Fox was 2nd with 13lbs 3ozs and Terry Lincoln was 3rd with 13lbs 2ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Taylor's Top Lake

6th October 2021

Our October inter club match with Bishop’s Stortford was fished on the Top lake at Taylor’s. Weather conditions were pretty good, but with the weed dying off and the lake starting to go quite clear, it proved to be a day of low weights for all. There were a few decent F1’s and the odd bream caught, other than that it was down to catching as many silver fish as we could. Team wise it was a comfortable win for Abbey Cross with 99 points to Bishop’s Stortford’s 74. Individually weights were very close, I had 10lbs 6ozs for first, just pipping Barry Cornell who had 10lbs 5ozs and Peter Green 3rd with 9lbs 9ozs.

Triple Cup - Taylors Lakes

5th September 2021

The Triple Cup is an annual competition fished  between Abbey Cross, Bishop’s Stortford & Sawbridgeworth, this year each club provided a team of 12 anglers.  The venue for the event was Taylor’s using both lakes. With 36 anglers spread around the lakes it proved to be a challenging day for most of us, with weights well down compared to our normal club matches. Team wise Abbey Cross anglers put in a good performance and had a comfortable win with 68 points, Bishop’s Stortford  were 2nd with 81 points and Sawbridgeworth were 3rd with 84 points. Individually, we had Jeff Pearson in 1st place with 27lbs 4ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Hall Farm

1st September 2021

Our latest inter club match with Bishop’s Stortford was fished at their Hall Farm Lake. Despite a cool northerly breeze the lake fished pretty well with over 400lbs of fish, mostly carp and F1’s, weighed in by the 17 anglers taking part. Team wise it was a very close run affair with Bishop’s Stortford just coming out on top with 69 points to our 67. Individually Phil Whitmill had top weight with 62lbs 7ozs, I was 2nd with 59-5-0 and Bob Fox was 3rd with 51lbs 5ozs.

BBQ Match Pairs & Lil' Williams Trophy

Taylor's 28th August 2021

This match was originally scheduled for July, but had to rearranged due to Covid restrictions. This led to a smaller turnout than usual with 20 people fishing and another dozen or so coming along in the evening for the BBQ. The pairs match was fished on the Top Lake, whilst the individuals had their competition on the Car Park Lake. On the day the Top lake produced a couple of good weights, with the Car Park Lake being a lot harder. The pairs event was won by Jean & Peter Green with a combined weight of 44lbs 4ozs, Jo Smith & Louise Jordan were 2nd  with 14lbs 15ozs and Terri & Martin Adams 3rd with 12lbs 14ozs. In the individual event Graham Cable was 1st with 6lbs 14ozs, Ken Farrell was 2nd with 3lbs 15ozs and Jo Higginson was 3rd with 3lbs 8ozs. The Lil Williams Trophy was won by Jo Smith and Jean Green won the prize for the best weight caught by a guest. The evening BBQ food and drink were excellent and everyone had an enjoyable time.  Finally, a big thank you to all those who put in a lot  of effort to make the event  a success.

ACAS v METVETS

Albans Lakes 11th August 2021

This match was the 2nd leg of our annual interclub competition with METVETS. The venue was the match lake at Albans Lakes located near St Albans, a water that most of us had not fished before. The lake is heavily stocked with match sized carp, plus some decent sized bream. Most of it is very deep, but with gravel bars and adjacent gullies which where the fish prefer to be this time of year. On the day METVETS local knowledge really came to the fore and they had an easy win scoring 125 points to our 85. Individually, Keith Goulden of METVETS was 1st with 151lbs 6ozs, Martin Barsby also of METVETS was 2nd with 95-8-0 and Peter Green of Abbey Cross was 3rd with 87-0-0.

Memorial Match

Taylor's Top Lake 8th August 2021

The annual Memorial Match is held in memory of club members who are no longer with us and was fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s. With many people again being on holiday there was a lower turnout than is normal for this event. Last year’s match was fished in a heatwave with temperature in excess of the 30 degrees, this time it was more like the middle of autumn with plenty of rain showers and a cool breeze. Understandably, overall weights were well down on recent matches with Jeff Pearson taking  1st place with a weight of 25lbs 12ozs, Peter Green was 2nd with 21lbs 15ozs and I was 3rd with 16lbs 13ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS

Hunter's Hall Lake 4th August 2021

This month’s inter club match with Bishop’s Stortford was fished at Hunter’s Hall. Turnout on theses matches is normally good, however numbers were down on the day probably due to people being on holiday. As is usual with this venue winning weights were pretty good with bags of tench and bream being caught, for the rest of the field it was down to catching as many roach and rudd as you could to get points for the team. Abbey Cross were top team wise with 54 points to Bishop’s Stortford’s 46. Individually I was 1st with 33lbs 3ozs, Peter Green was 2nd with 32lbs 4ozs and Ray Gibson was 3rd with 22lbs 7ozs.

CARP CUP & ATG CUP

NAZEING CAR PARK LAKE 25TH JULY 2021

This match was fished on the Car Park Lake at Nazeing. Conditions were pretty good, although there was an awkward north westerly breeze to deal with. As usually happens when we have a match on this lake there were good weights for those drawn on favoured pegs, whilst the majority struggled to find the odd fish. Top on the day was Kevin Shaw with 95lbs 5ozs, I was 2nd with 63lbs and Alan Fox was 3rd with 52lbs 5ozs. We also fished for ATG Trophy which is for the biggest carp caught on the day, this was won by Jeff Pearson who had a nice fish of 16lbs 13ozs.

Club Match Taylor's Car Park Lake

10th July 2021

With the postponement of the BBQ match that had been due to be held on this particular day, we decided that we would have a an impromptu match on the Car Park lake at Taylor’s. This water has proved to be quite a challenge in recent months and so it proved on the day. There were few reasonable weights of small fish caught, but decent sized fish were very hard to come by. I had top weight with 6lbs 11ozs made up of small skimmers, roach & rudd, Jeff Pearson was 2nd with 4lbs 7ozs and Bob Fox was 3rd with 3lbs 15ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Malcolm Barker Lake

7th July 2021

Our latest inter club match was fished on Bishops Stortford’s Malcolm Barker lake, which is located nearby to Taylor’s . With most of the pegs on the lake being used on this small lake it was always going to be a low weight affair. For those on the favoured pegs there were tench and bream to fish for, otherwise it was down to catching the small skimmers, roach & rudd that inhabit the lake. Team wise  Abbey Cross had a comfortable win with 87 points to Bishops Stortford’s 50. Nazeing Car Park Lake 20th June 2021

The Car Park Lake at Nazeing was the venue for our latest match.  With the lake having been closed for 2 weeks prior to the event it was difficult to predict in advance how it would fish. In the end it turned out to be a challenging  time for all. With little wind and flat calm conditions the resident carp showed little interest in feeding for most of the day. 1st with 4 fish for 37lbs 3ozs was Steve Cable, Peter Green was 2nd with 29lbs 15ozs and Jo Higginson 3rd with 28lbs 7ozs.

Generally the lake fished better than on our other recent visits, with the top weights made up of good numbers of tench and bream. There were also plenty of roach and rudd to be caught from all around the lake. Ken Farrell won the day with 32lbs 8ozs, Ken also won the tench Cup as his weight included 29lbs 6ozs of tench.  ACAS v BSDAS

Nazeing Car Park Lake 2nd June 2021

We fished our latest inter club match with Bishops Stortford on the Car Park Lake at Nazeing. Team wise Abbey Cross won the day with 64 points to Bishop Stortford’s 53 points. I had the top weight with 108lbs 2ozs, Sam Robinson was 2nd with 67lbs 8ozs and Terry Moranda 3rd with 66lbs 13ozs.

Arthur Tully Trophy

Taylor's Top Lake 23rd May 2021

The top lake at Taylor’s was the venue for this year’s  Arthur Tully Trophy. Once again a warm up in water temperatures and a south westerly breeze led to a modest improvement in catches compared to our visits to the lake over recent weeks. Most of the winning weights consisted of F1’s with the odd bream and tench making a welcome appearance. 1st on the day was Alan Sims with 22lbs 3ozs, Bob Walmsley was 2nd with 16lbs 13ozs and Peter Green 3rd with 14lbs 4ozs.

Hunter's Hall

9th May 2021

This was our 2nd visit to Hunter’s Hall in a couple of weeks and although the results weren’t great there was a definite improvement upon our first visit. This was probably due to a slight warm up in the weather and an end to the northerly winds that we had been suffering for several weeks. All the top weights consisted of decent sized tench and bream, with silver fish noticeably absent.  Top on the day was Chris Beaumont with 35lbs 9ozs, Peter Green  was 2nd with 15lbs 10ozs and Bob Fox 3rd with 15lbs 2ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Beggar's Hall

5th May 2021

Our latest inter club match was fished on Bishop Stortford’s normally prolific Beggar’s Hall lake. However, with the seemingly never ending spell of cold nights and northerly winds continuing none of us were expecting it to fish very well. In fact it fished very poorly indeed with everyone struggling for the odd bite, although a number of those who caught did have a decent sized carp or two for their efforts. Team wise Abbey Cross came 1st with 90 points to Bishops Stortford’s 81 points. Individually Peter Green had top weight with 14lbs, Sam Robison was 2nd with 11lbs 14ozs and Fred Hunt 3rd with 9lbs 2ozs.

Club Match Hunter's Hall

25th April 2021

Our latest club match was fished at Hunter’s Hall and was our first match on the venue this year. Unfortunately, the long running spell of cold nights and northerly winds once again had a major impact on how it fished and results were far below what we would normally expect for this time of year. I was fortunate to draw a favoured peg and had a top weight of 32lbs 14ozs made up of tench and bream, Alan Sims was 2nd with 10lbs 3ozs which included a good number of silver fish and Peter Green  was 3rd with 6lbs 14ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Taylor’s Top Lake

7th April 2021

The Top Lake at Taylor’s was the venue for our first inter club match with Bishops Stortford following the easing of restrictions. With a heavy overnight frost and a cold northerly wind blowing down the lake it was always going to be a challenging day. For the majority of us it was a case of sitting it out for the odd F1, or trying to catch a few small silver fish . Team wise it was a good result for Abbey Cross who secured a comfortable win with 115 points to Bishop’s Stortford’s 94. Individually top weight on the day went to Alan Sims with a very good weight of 36lbs 6ozs, Nick Farrell was 2nd with 12lbs 8ozs and I was 3rd with 11lbs 8ozs.

Club Match Taylor's Top Lake

11th April 2021

The Top Lake at Taylor’s was the venue for our first club match since December. Weather conditions were very similar to those we had for Wednesday’s inter club match and once again it was a difficult day for those taking part, with odd pockets of F1’s making up the bulk of weights. We are desperately in need of some warmer days and nights with a south westerly breeze to help get the fish feeding and hopefully improve catches. On the day I had top weight with 20lbs 2ozs, Nick Farrell was 2nd with 16lbs 9ozs and Peter Green 3rd with 14lbs 11ozs.
