Gaye Plate Xmas Match Taylor's Lake

7th December 2019

Our annual Xmas match was fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s and fortunately conditions were a bit warmer than on the previous weeks inter club match. We had a good turnout of 14 anglers and there were some reasonable weights of F1’s and tench recorded by those on the favoured pegs. I was fortunate to get top weight on the day with 36lbs 13ozs, John Pretious was 2nd with 20lbs exactly and Jo Smith 3rd with 12lbs 6ozs. In the evening we reconvened at the Galley Hall pub in Hailey with our partners and guests for the prize giving and a traditional Xmas meal. Thanks to Andy Ingram for organising the meal and prizes and to Peter Green for the pre match snacks and drinks.

ACAS v BSDAS

Taylor's Car Park Lake 4th December 2019

December’s inter club match with Bishops Stortford was fished on Car Park Lake at Taylor’s. Following a long cold spell and with water temperatures at near zero we knew we were in for a difficult day.  Even the usually reliable silver fish were hard to come by, with only 9 of the 14 anglers taking part able to put fish on the scales. Team wise Bishops Stortford had an easy win with their 5 anglers who weighed in amassing 55 points, whereas our four who caught could only muster 37. Individually Bishop Stortford’s Fred  Hunt was an easy winner weighing 14lbs 14ozs of decent sized bream, Phil Whitmill was 2nd with 2lbs 5ozs and Ken Farrell 3rd with 1lb 10ozs.

Rose Bowl Taylor's Car Park Lake

24th November 2019

This seasons Rose Bowl completion was fished on the Car Park lake at Taylor’s. Following the recent cold spell the lake was very clear and with little wind we knew we were in for a hard day. With thirteen of us fishing, we spread the pegs out around the lake in the hope that someone would be able to catch a few quality fish. In the end it was Tony Smith and Bob Walmsley on adjacent pegs who shared a shoal of decent sized F1’s, plus a couple of the newly stocked bream. By the end of the day Tony came out on top with a winning weight of 23lbs, while Bob was 2nd with 12lbs 140zs. After that it was down to weights of small roach and the odd bream, with Jeff Pearson being the best of the rest with 4lbs 8ozs.

Ron Wise Trophy

River Rib (Rib Valley) 10th November 2019

The River Rib at Rib Valley was the venue for this year’s Ron Wise Trophy. Unfortunately, despite several weeks of persistent rain, the Rib still has virtually no flow and remains very clear. Whether abstraction further upstream is the issue I am not sure, but in the last couple of years no amount of rain seems to help increase the flow of the river. With far from ideal fishing conditions we all knew we were in for a hard day. I was fortunate to find a few good quality roach and was able to weigh in 2lbs 11ozs for 1st place, Ken Farrell also caught some good roach and was 2nd with 2lbs 4ozs, with Paul Helbig  3rd with 15ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Beggar's Hall

6th November 2019

Our latest midweek inter club match was fished on Bishop’s Stortford’s Beggar’s Hall Lake. Despite the recent large amounts of rain, the water levels on the lake were still very low. This led to most of us having to fish from bank in front of the platforms. Conditions on the day after a light frost, were dead calm with little or no wind, never ideal from a fishing perspective. This led to most of us waiting for the odd decent carp or two to show an interest in our hook bait.  However, there was one area of the lake that seemed to be full of feeding carp and Peter Green made the most of this weighing in an impressive 120lbs 11ozs for the individual 1st place. Team wise Bishops Stortford took the honours with 72 points to our 64.

Ouse Trophy Box End Farm

27th October 2019

The club’s stretch of the River Ouse at Box End Farm was the venue for our latest club match. Following the recent heavy rain the river looked in good condition on our arrival with plenty of flow and a tinge of colour. However, as the day went on the level rose and the flow increased making the fishing progressively more difficult. Despite this there were fish to catch and the final weights were considerably better than on our visit  last year. I ended up top with a weight of 6lbs 12oz made up of mostly roach and dace, Bob Fox was 2nd with 6lbs 2ozs & Terry Lincoln 3rd with 2lbs 9ozs.

Random Pairs Top Lake Taylor's

13th October 2019

This year the Random Pairs match was fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s. Following several days of rain we were lucky to fish the first half of the match in the dry before the rain eventually returned. Those taking part also had to deal with a blustery wind which made pole fishing difficult for all except a few sheltered pegs. Given the conditions there were a few reasonable weights of F1’s & tench, with Ken Farrell & John Pretious  putting together a 22 point winning score. It was a close run thing for 2nd place with Alan Fox & Barry Cornell tying on points with Bob Walmsley & Jeff Pearson, however Alan & Barry took the honours due to a higher combined weight. Individually, Alan Fox had top weight with 24lbs 14ozs and Alan also won the golden peg.

ACAS v BSDAS Hunter's Hall

2nd October 2019

It was back to Hunter’s Hall for our latest inter club match with Bishops Stortford. Conditions were a little kinder than on the Sunday, with a northerly breeze, but no rain. There were some better weights than a few days earlier, with a few more tench and bream being prepared to feed. Team wise results were really close with Bishops Stortford just taking the honours with 68 points to our 65 points.  Individually Phil Whitmill had top weight with 38lbs 6ozs,Terry Tucker was 2nd with 16lbs 6ozs and Tony Cruci 3rd wIth 9lbs 15ozs.

John Duff Cup Hunter's Hall

29th September 2019

This match was fished on the clubs Hunter’s Hall lake. Weather wise it was challenging day with strong south westerly winds and plenty of rain later in the day. Also, fishing wise it was a tough with just a few tench and the odd silver fish being caught and therefore weights were well down on recent visits to the lake. Top weight on the day went to Alan Sims 11bs 11ozs, with new member Jeff Pearson a close 2nd with 11bs 2ozs and I was 3rd with 7lbs 2ozs.

Norfolk Weekend Wye Trophy & River Cup

For this year’s weekend away the club returned to the Norfolk Broads to fish the River Bure at St Benets Abbey and the River Thurne at Coldharbour. Saturday’s match was at St Benets where we were fortunate to have sunny weather and a gentle breeze. This is a tidal river and we had an incoming and rising tide for most of the match which is not ideal, despite this it fished fairly well, with everyone catching skimmers, roach and perch on a variety of methods. I had top weight on the day with 17lbs 13ozs, Graham Cable was 2nd with 16lbs 15ozs and Phil Nicholls 3rd with 13lbs 6ozs. The following day we were at Coldharbour, weather conditions were again good, although we still had the incoming tide to deal with. Weights were down a bit on those of  the previous day, although the top three places were extremely closely contested. Andy Ingram took 1st place with 13lbs 13ozs, I was 2nd with 13lbs 11ozs and Graham Cable was 3rd 12lbs 12ozs. Once again we all had a great weekend of fishing and socialising and hopefully we will be returning next year.

ACAS v BSDAS Hall Farm

4th September 2019

Our September inter club match with Bishops Stortford was fished on their Hall Farm Lake. Weather wise it was a difficult day with a strong north westerly breeze blowing down the lake and a consequent big drop in air temperature. In recent weeks leading up to the match the lake had been fishing very hard, however the cooler temperatures on the day did lead to a few more fish being prepared to feed. Team wise it was a really close run affair, with Abbey Cross just beating Bishops Stortford 89 points to 82. Individually I had top weight on the day with 42lbs 2ozs, Dave Holdsworth of Bishops Stortford was 2nd with 35lbs 10ozs and our Tony Parker was 3rd with 33lbs 7ozs.

TRIPLE CUP TEAMS OF 15

FENNES FISHERY 1st September 2019

The Triple Cup is an annual competition fished  between Abbey Cross, Bishop’s Stortford & Sawbridgeworth, with each club providing a team of 15 anglers.  The venue for this year’s match was Fennes Fishery which is a commercial complex located near Braintree. On the two previous occasions the event has been held at Fennes Fishery, Abbey Cross have won the trophy, so hopes were high for a similar result this time. On the day our anglers put together an impressive performance and were rewarded with an easy win scoring 88 points, Sawbridgeworth were 2nd with 130 points and Bishops Stortford 3rd with 145 points. Individually, we had Alan Sims coming 3rd overall, we also had Nick Farrell and Bob Fox winning their sections.

Taylor's Top Lake 25th August 2019

There was a pretty good turnout for this competition which was fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s. However, with temperatures in the mid 30’s and very little breeze on the water it was always going to be hard going. Those who managed to put a few fish together caught mostly F1’s with the odd tench thrown in. Weights on the day were very close, with just over one pound covering the top five anglers. Steve Evans took 1st place with 19lbs 9ozs, Paul sales was 2nd with 19lbs 2ozs and ken Farrell 3rd with 18lbs 12oz.

There was a last minute change of venue for the 2nd leg of our inter club match with METVETS. We were due to be fish METVETS own lake at Wrotham Park, however due to local access problems we agreed to switch it to the Car Park lake at Taylor’s. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a really tough day with the lake being at its most unproductive, with just the odd decent fish and a few small roach being caught. Team wise it was a really close run affair with Abbey Cross just beating METVETS 70 points to 68. Individually, Keith Gould of METVETS was 1st with 6lbs 11ozs, our Alan Fox was 2nd with 6lbs 4ozs and Martin Barsby of METVETS 3rd with 4lbs 14ozs.

For our latest inter club match with Bishops Stortford it was a return to the Car Park lake at Nazeing. Despite this there were some good weights of carp caught from the more favoured pegs. Team wise Bishops Stortford got their tactics right on the day, scoring 102 points and achieving an easy win over Abbey Cross who had 68. Individually Abbey Cross took the top honours with Peter Green 1st with a weight of 108lbs 5ozs and I was 2nd with 91lbs 4ozs. Fred Hunt of Bishops Stortford was 3rd with 70lbs 10ozs

The Car Park Lake at Nazeing was the venue for this year’s Carp Cup. Conditions on the day were good with a gentle breeze and hazy sunshine. Expectations were high that we would have better day than when we last fished the lake on a cold day in May. Fishpools Cup Hunter's Hall

14th July 2019

This year’s Fishpools Trophy was fished at the club’s Hunter’s Hall lake. Fishing on the lake had been quite patchy in the lead up to the match and this form continued on the day. There were good weights from a couple of pegs, with the rest of us finding it hard work to put a decent bag of fish together. On the positive side it was good to see reasonable numbers of silver fish being caught. Top spot on the day went to Nick Prince with an excellent weight of 41lbs 9ozs, Alan Sims  was second with 27lbs 2ozs and John Pretious third with 17lbs 13ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Malcolm Barker

3rd July 2019

Our latest inter club match was fished on Bishops Stortford’s Malcolm Barker lake. With most of the pegs on the lake being used it was always going to be a low weight affair. For those on the favoured pegs there were a few decent carp and tench to go for, otherwise it was down to catching the numerous small skimmers, roach & rudd that inhabit the lake. On the day Bishops Stortford’s local knowledge came to the fore and they took the team honours with 98 points to our 73. Individually John Pretious was 1st with 15bs 2ozs, David Jones was 2nd with 13lbs 12ozs and Fred Hunt 3rd with 12lbs 2oz. all of who were fishing for Bishops Stortford.

BBQ Match Pairs & Lil' Williams Trophy

Taylor's 22nd June 2019

There was an excellent turnout for this year’s BBQ match held on both of our club lakes at Taylor’s. In total we had nearly 50 people fishing the pairs and individual competitions, plus quite a few more who came along just for the BBQ. The pairs match was fished on the Top Lake, whilst the individuals had their competition on the Car Park Lake. On the day the hot and sunny weather was great for the BBQ, but not so good from a fishing perspective. The Top Lake fished okay for the pairs with a few reasonable weights and nearly everyone weighing in. However,  the Car Park Lake fished a lot harder with those in the individual competition struggling for a few fish. The pairs event was won for the second year running by Jean & Peter Green with a combined weight of 34lbs 11ozs, Imma & Bill Beaumont were 2nd  with 18lbs 13ozs and Terri & Martin Adams 3rd with 15lbs 11ozs. In the individual event Dave Self-Pierson was 1st with 6lbs 9ozs, Pat Rawlings 2nd with 5lbs 8ozs and Bob Walmsley 3rd with 4lbs 8ozs. The Lil Williams Trophy was won by Jo Smith with a weight of 5lbs 4ozs.

The evening BBQ food and drink were excellent and everyone seemed to have an enjoyable time.  Finally, a big thank you to all those who put in a huge amount of effort to make the event  a success.

Memorial Match Taylor's Car Park Lake

15th June 2019

The annual Memorial Match is run in memory of all our club members who are no longer with us. This year’s event was fished on the Car Park lake at Taylor’s which had been producing some good bags of fish in recent weeks. However, with unseasonably cool temperatures and after many days of heavy rain we all ended up struggling to put fish in the net. 1st place on the day went to Barry Cornell with 12lbs 6ozs, I was 2nd with 11lbs 8ozs and Peter Green 3rd with 7lbs 15ozs.

Rib Valley Charity Match

12th June 2019

This annual match is organised by Rib Valley Angling and is fished on their main match lake, with all of the money raised going to Isabel Hospice. There were seven local clubs taking part, with each club providing 5 anglers. As is often the case with this lake the match was hard going for most of the competitors, with the top weights made up of a few decent bream, or carp. Team wise Rib Valley’s own match team came first, with Abbey Cross taking a creditable second place. Individually we also had two section winners in Bob Walmsley & Peter Green.

ACAS v BSDAS Taylor's Top Lake

5th June 2019

The Top Lake at Taylor’s was the venue for our latest inter club match with Bishops Stortford and as with the recent club match the venue fished pretty well with plenty of fish being caught from around the lake. Team wise our local knowledge came to the fore and we had an easy win with 132 points to Bishop Stortford’s 78. Individually Abbey Cross had Pat Rawlings in 1st place with a weight of 35lbs 12oz and Paul Sales in 2nd with 28lbs 8ozs, 3rd place went to Terry Tucker of Bishops Stortford with 26lbs 6ozs.

Paul Sales Trophy & Tench Cup

Hunter's Hall 2nd June 2019

There were two trophies up for grabs on this match, one for the largest total weight and one for the largest weight of tench. Our venue for the day was Hunter’s Hall and despite a stiff breeze and the lake being quite clear conditions looked promising for good day. However, fishing wise it was a case of feast or famine with some good results recorded for a few, whilst most of us struggled to catch anything at all. Results wise for the first time in many years Paul Sales won his own trophy, with a total weight of 44lbs 3ozs made up of mostly tench and bream, Steve Evans was 2nd with 23lbs 7ozs and Bob Walmsley 3rd with 16lbs 14ozs. Paul also won the tench Cup with 37lbs 11ozs of his total catch being tench.

Arthur Tully Trophy

Taylor's Top Lake 19th May 2019

The top lake at Taylor’s was the venue for the latest club match. We had a good turnout of 15 anglers and with little wind and plenty of cloud cover hopes were high for a good day. Fortunately this is how it turned out with good weights of tench, bream and F1’s being caught from around the lake. In all over 300lbs of fish were weighed in by those taking part. Top on the day with an excellent weight of 55lbs 7ozs was Alan Fox, Ricky Young was 2nd with 36lbs 14ozs and Steve Evans 3rd with 29lbs 8ozs.

Carrington Cup

Nazeing Car Park Lake

5th May 2019

It was a disappointing turn out for this year’s Carrington Cup fished on the Car Park lake at Nazeing, probably not helped by the fact that it had been the clubs presentation evening the day before. For those of us who did fish It was a slow start following a cold, clear night, however we did end up with some decent sized carp between us, including two 16lbs plus fish. I had top weight on the day with 38lbs 12ozs and Peter Green was 2nd with 27lbs 9ozs.

ACAS v BSDAS Beggar's Hall

1st May 2019

Our latest midweek inter club match was fished on Bishop’s Stortford’s Beggar’s Hall Lake. Conditions on the day were quite good and hopes were high for some decent weights. However, many of the resident carp spent the whole day swimming round on the surface and showing little interest in feeding. By the end of a frustrating day for most of us it was down to weighing in the odd decent carp. Team wise Abbey Cross came out on top with 83 points to Bishop Stortford’s 74 . Individually Alan Sims did well with 45lbs 1oz for 1st place and Nick Prince also of Abbey Cross coming 2nd with 22lbs 1oz.

Proudlove Cup Hunter's Hall

28th April 2019

Hunter’s Hall was the venue for our latest club match. With a cool north westerly breeze blowing down the lake conditions were far from ideal, however weights were a little better than in recent matches with a fair number of tench being caught. Although, there were none of the usually reliable roach, rudd and skimmers around to be caught. Top weight on the day went to Nick Prince with a weight of 19lbs 11ozs, I was 2nd with 17lbs 6ozs and Bob Walmsley 3rd with 14lbs 3ozs.

7th April 2019

Following on from a couple of difficult matches at Hunter’s Hall it was good to see some good weights and everyone weighing in for the Burrough’s Cup, fished on the Top Lake at Taylor’s. Decent numbers of F1’s and tench were caught form all round the lake, with over 230lbs of fish being weighed in. ACAS v BSDAS

Hunter's Hall 3rd April 2019

It was back to Hunter’s Hall for our latest inter club match with Bishops Stortford. With conditions being very similar to our club match a few days earlier a difficult day was expected and that is just how it turned out with only seven of the sixteen angler’s taking part weighing in. Team wise Abbey Cross were easy winners with 65 points to Bishops Stortford’s 26. Individually Terry Tucker had top weight with a 20lbs, Bob Walmsley was 2nd with 14lbs 6ozs and Pat Rawlings 3rd with 11bs 6ozs.

Club Match Hunter's Hall

31st March 2019

Hunter’s Hall was the venue for our latest club match. The cool cold conditions led to it being a difficult day for most of us, with only six people weighing in. ACAS v BSDAS

Hall Farm 5th March 2019

Our latest inter club match was fished at Bishop’s Stortford Hall Farm lake. Being only a few days after our Officer’s Cup match at Taylor’s it was hoped that Hall Farm would fish equally as well.  Unfortunately, this was far from the case with all fourteen anglers struggling for bites in the windy conditions.  Team wise Bishops Stortford came out on top with 57 points to our 42. Individually, Bob Walmsley of Abbey Cross did well to claim 1st place with 15lbs 1oz, Jeff Pearson of Bishops Stortford was 2nd with 8lbs 5ozs and Ray Gibson also of Bishops Stortford 3rd with 6lbs 14ozs.

Officers Cup Taylor's Top Lake

3rd March 2019

The recent spell of milder weather lead to some excellent catches on the Top Lake at Taylor’s for this seasons Officer’s Cup . There was nearly 300lbs of fish weighed in by the 11 anglers taking part with good bags being caught from all around the lake. Top weight on the day was Tony Smith with 69lbs 14ozs, Peter Green was 2nd with 54lbs 2ozs and Alan Sims 3rd with 38lbs 6ozs. Peter Green won the Officers Cup as the top officer of the club taking part.

Rose Bowl River Stort Backstream

6th January 2019

This seasons Rose Bowl completion was fished on a backwater of the River Stort owned by the Bishops Stortford club. The backwater is located just upstream of Taylor’s and is quite narrow with canal boats moored on the far bank. This venue responds really well when it has a bit of flow and colour, however with very little rain lately we were faced with clear water conditions and little flow. Consequently, weights were well down on previous visits and most weights were made up of numbers of very small roach and the odd decent perch. Top on the day was Ricky Young with 5lbs 3ozs, I was second with 2lbs 5ozs, with Alan Sims and Andy Ingram tying for third place with 1lbs 10ozs.
